Wedding makeup trial guide: What to expect and how to prepare for a luxury bridal experience

The journey to your wedding day is paved with choices. Among the most pivotal is your bridal makeup trial, a key appointment in your calendar, where your wedding makeup artist will create a look that is authentically you, yet elevated for the camera and the aisle.

As a luxury bridal makeup artist covering Suffolk, Essex, and destinations worldwide, I believe the trial is a creative collaboration; we'll work together to highlight your natural beauty. Your preferences and opinions are just as important as my experience and expertise - so come prepared to be involved! But also, this is your chance to relax, feel seen and heard, and come away feeling your best.

To help you navigate this experience, I’ve answered the most frequent questions my brides ask when preparing for their session.

Wedding makeup trial essentials: Timing and preparation

Do I really need a bridal makeup trial?

While not mandatory, a trial is highly recommended for the discerning bride. It allows us to test how specific products interact with your skin over several hours and ensures that on the morning of your wedding, you can sit back, Champagne in hand, knowing exactly how you will look and feel.

When is the best time to book my trial?

I typically recommend scheduling your trial 3 to 6 months before your wedding. By this stage, you likely have your dress, your venue, and your floral palette confirmed - all of which heavily influence the "mood" of your makeup.

How should I prepare my skin?

The most beautiful makeup starts with the canvas. In the months leading up to your date, focus on hydration and gentle exfoliation. If your budget allows, opt for a professional facial 7-10 days before your trial. On the day of your trial, arrive with a clean, moisturised face, and try to avoid serums. If you have prescribed skincare, a targeted skincare routine, or a dermatologist-approved product you love, please do share those details with me.

Should I bring inspiration photos?

Absolutely. Visuals are the best way to bridge the gap between "natural" and "glam," which can mean different things to everyone. I encourage you to bring images that resonate with you, as well as a photo of your dress. We will use these as a starting point to curate a look tailored to your unique features.

If possible, try to find images of your ideal makeup look on brides with a similar skin tone and hair colour to you.

Is it best to have hair and makeup trials on the same day?

Logistically, this isn't always possible, but seeing the "total look" together is incredibly helpful. If you cannot coordinate both, I recommend styling your hair yourself in a way that mimics your wedding day vision.

Emily’s Insight: Hair frames the face and dictates how makeup is perceived. If you have soft, face-framing tendrils, heavier or more glamorous makeup will naturally appear softer. However, if you are opting for a sleek, "scraped-back" bun or ponytail, the same makeup can appear much more intense. Knowing your hairstyle helps me balance the "weight" of your makeup perfectly.

Can I bring a guest with me?

While most of my brides choose to attend alone to enjoy a moment of calm, you are more than welcome to bring one trusted guest, such as your mother or Maid of Honour. I do recommend keeping your "entourage" small; too many opinions can become a distraction. This is a time for us to focus entirely on your preferences and ensure the environment remains professional and relaxed.

Can I try multiple looks during the session?

My trials are an immersive two-hour experience. We begin with an in-depth consultation where I ask detailed questions to understand your style, comfort level, and wedding theme. Within the allocated time, we focus on perfecting one cohesive look, though we can certainly tweak and refine elements (such as lip shade or lash density) as we go.

Do my bridesmaids need a trial?

It is certainly not necessary - this is your day, after all! However, if you would like an extra layer of peace of mind, I can offer an additional trial for one key member of your party. Due to my bespoke schedule and travel commitments across the UK and abroad, I am unable to see every bridesmaid for a trial, but fitting in one extra "VIP" session is often possible.

The luxury bridal makeup trial checklist

To ensure your consultation is as seamless and productive as possible, please keep this checklist in mind:

  • Wear white or neutral: To see how the makeup tones interact with your bridal palette, try to wear a top or dress in a similar shade to your wedding gown.

  • The "hair" factor: If you aren't having a hair trial on the same day, try styling your hair in a similar style to your wedding day hair. If you're undecided on a style, bring a hair tie or clip so we can experiment with how the makeup looks with your hair both up and down.

  • Your skin canvas: Arrive with a clean, "naked" face. Continue your usual hydration routine in the 24 hours leading up to our session.

  • The inspiration edit: Have your top 3–5 Pinterest or Instagram saves ready on your phone, along with a photo of your dress and any jewelry you plan to wear.

  • Tan check: If you plan on having a professional spray tan for your wedding day, it is highly beneficial to have a "trial tan" for your makeup session so we can match your foundation perfectly.

  • Lighting and longevity: Try to schedule your trial for the morning or early afternoon. This allows us to check the makeup in natural daylight and gives you the rest of the day to see how it wears.
